I started this blog because I’ve come into a time in my life where I like looking put together.  Where everyday doesn’t have to be fancy, but it’s nice to look nice. This puts me in a difficult spot when I don’t feel like picking out an outfit at all.  Like when jammies sound like the most appealing thing to wear. So I look into my closet and brainstorm, thinking what checks the boxes of comfy and put together? This is when I realized that maybe my uniform this spring/summer will be casual top, skirt, and white Converse. I’m a little obsessed with this combination right now because it gives you so many options, but no heel or wedges required.  And then you’re playful and put together. And everyone is like aw, you’re so cute, and you’re like, I know. Congrats, you’re the cutest thing this summer. I just gave you that.

And another year of life has gone by.  This past weekend, while I had a lot of fun and made the best poor decisions, most importantly was good for my soul.  I never make a huge to do about my birthday, but it’s always nice to be surrounded by close friends and those who mean the most.  We started the festivities by watching the Kentucky Derby and the horse I bet on won the race!  Then I drank all the bourbon in Manhattan, and Phil and I had a relaxing Sunday to enjoy each other’s company. It was a near perfect 48 hours. Birthday + Derby = double the reason to get a little dolled up and wear a big hat. And I needed to show off my new dress, a cozy little number that can be dressed up or down.

This past week has been a blur.  Beginning  a new job has right off the bat has become overwhelming and I’m running on fumes a bit.  It’s left me with less time than I anticipated to accomplish some things on my to do list, namely blog posts!  But I whipped together this cake and had to share.  It’s a no frills type of photo shoot, but when you have a Mint Julep Cake, who needs food props? The Kentucky Derby is tomorrow, as well as my birthday, so it’s double celebration time. If you have a party with some big hats involved, this cake is the perfect finishing touch.  Fluffy white cake with a bourbon soak, mint and lime frosting and a bourbon caramel drizzle.  That’s bourbon twice.
