Dessert Pear Lasagna | Domestic B(i)atch

10.21.16

As someone who is still learning about baking, about blogging, about desserts, I definitely look everywhere for inspiration.  I often look at many recipes before figuring out the one I think is best, or creating one of my own. But when I Google things like ‘dessert lasagna’ and nothing comes up that looks like what I want to make, I start to get nervous.  Is what I’m thinking of impossible? Everything has been done, there is nothing original, just variations, so where is it?? Everything I saw in this genre was a no-bake, involved a lot of cheesecake layers and/or berry compotes.  But what I wanted to make was different. Pie crust as the “noodles,” and pears tossed in brown sugar and cinnamon as the “sauce.” I decided to get crazy and try it anyway.  And it worked. Par-baking the first two layers to avoid soggy or under-baked crusts, delicious pears in between flakey goodness. It created a fall dessert that can easily feed a crowd. I also always imagine if what I bake can be accompanied by ice cream, yep, it’s almost criminal not to.  I think the possibilities of your ‘sauce’ are endless. So start brainstorming.

Meatlover Quiche-12

4.11.16

I couldn’t leave the country without giving you one more recipe, which turned out to be one of the best and heartiest breakfasts I’d had in a long time.  I’m not the biggest fan of veggies, and while I’ve been trying to adult a little more and bring healthier stuff into my diet, I’m a sucker for two things: meat and any form of pizza around.  So quiche’s haven’t been big on my radar because I normally associate it with including broccoli. Ick. But when I realized that I could put whatever I wanted into a quiche (similar to a hot pocket), I really wanted to make one. So I stuffed this one with meat and two kinds of cheese. And it was soft, and full of flavor, with a bit of a kick because of the chorizo I used. And if you’re an avid carnivore like me, I highly recommend trying it.

Oh October!!!! Here you are! And while everyone posts on social media that famous October quote, I’ll just flat out say autumn continues to be the best.  Sweaters and scarves, colored knee socks and dresses with pattered tights. Cozy evenings with bourbon or pumpkin ale.   An impending hurricane in NYC has left the city wet, blustery and cold.  Not that it stopped us from taking AWESOME rockstar photos for this post.

I think one of the best things to come out of creating this blog is how incredibly supportive and encouraging my friends have been about it.  At this point that’s probably all that’s reading this, my fantastic friends, and their feedback and excitement has added to my own. So on this post I was able to do my first collaboration and bake WITH a friend to make something for her husband to celebrate their 4 year wedding anniversary, his grandma’s banana cream pie.
