A Farewell to Summer

9.21.18

Whether you have been sipping you Pumpkin Spice Lattes and ciders since mid August, summer still hasn’t officially ended until this weekend.  I don’t know about you, but as always, summer has flown by. I was lucky enough to work on a project in an all female theatre festival, begin filming a web series I cannot wait to share even though this is a baking blog, had an audition for a prominent baking show (surprise, if you didn’t know, now you know, and I didn’t make it), explored parts of the city, drank all the rose, spent time with my friends and my husband and practiced new techniques in bread and dessert I had never attempted before.  I have been more than grateful that my casual temping schedule has allowed me to have a grand time these past few months.  So as a final hurrah, I wanted to share some pictures from our day adventure to Coney Island.

Coney Island is this beautiful circus of lights and people and food and rides.  I have spent a little time there after running the Brooklyn Half Marathon a number of times, because the race ends on the boardwalk.  However, post race chaos usually encourages my friends and I to scurry out of there ASAP.  Since Phil was able to take summer Fridays in August, we took advantage of the weekday and headed out to explore. We started our day at the Aquarium, which after living here for a decade neither of us had been to.  I was picked to be part of the seal show!! It was pretty magical, and I love animals so hard it was really breathtaking to be close to something so gentle but so huge.  I loved it.  There are videos if you’re interested in seeing my unashamed glee.

We made our way through the epic new shark exhibit, stared at pelicans and sea turtles before heading down the board walk along the mural painted walls and ending up at the Coney Island Brewery.  They had a few pints on draft we’ve heard of, but we opted for the exclusives only available at the brewery

Afterwards we watched the sun set, ate some jumbo shrimp, drank more beer and watched the lights on all the rides begin to appear.  We made our way back to Manhattan tipsy and sun kissed. The perfect way to be on any summer day.

I’ll miss summer.  I have many friends who hate the summer; the stickiness, the sweating, the general heat that comes along with it. They pine for the fall, they count down the days until this weekend when it’s official. But I love it.  I spent the first half of most of my childhood in the south, so the thick air doesn’t bother me.  I love not wearing make-up because I’m tan enough to get away with it.  Let’s face it, we’re all more attractive a little sun kissed.

I love cozy sweaters, but give me cut offs and a t-shirt any day, let me go for a run and finish it beet red and soaked. Give me flowy dresses and espadrilles forever please.

So here’s to summer! Farewell! You were too short, and the wait for you to come again will be too long!
