On the Road: An American in Mexico: Epilogue

Mexico-25

Final thoughts on this incredible trip? Well, first off, I’m going to get better at not feeling guilty for taking time off.  I think when you’re living as an artist, especially in NYC there’s this constant churning inside you.  It makes you feel like if you’re not pounding the pavement every second of every day, you don’t care about your art, and you’re not serious about what you do.  And this simply isn’t true. Phil and I hemmed and hawed over going on this trip when the money could’ve been saved, gone toward creative endeavors, or spent on just a nice dinner in the city, cause that would suffice, right? No. After our week together in Tulum it was clear we needed to take more times for ourselves and breathe.

It seems like every other culture in the world has a less speedy life than America, or more specifically, New York. When you dine in Mexico, no one is bringing the check unless you ask, no one is forcing you to leave, and everyone wants you to enjoy yourself.  It was difficult not to begin dreaming up our own ideas on how to live the simple life in Tulum. Would we be happy? Could we figure out how to make a living and just be….realizing there’s more to life than the constant hustle? In eight-plus years of living in New York, this was the first time out of town I wasn’t ready to go back to the electricity of the city. And we pondered a lot as we let the ocean sing us to sleep about life and the paths we’ve chosen. But I think in the end, we’re still willing to chase our dreams in the big city for a while longer before creating our jazz duo in Mexico.

Though that still sounds pretty nice.  I’m pretty killer on mouth trumpet.

As we had to say goodbye to Mexico, I thought it would be appropriate to save this outfit, featuring this skirt, for last; saying goodbye to one of my favorite stores online, which has sadly decided to close, Ruche. This skirt was one of the first things I bought for this trip. It was something I wasn’t interested in waiting until it went on sale, and I cannot wait to wear it as it warms up this summer. I am so sad to see Ruche go, I loved their style, loved supporting a smaller boutique business, and will miss mentally spending hundreds of dollars every time they have new arrivals.

I love the colors of this maxi skirt, they scream Mexico to me. Paired with these sandals from Stitch Fix, it was a match made in style heaven. Another essential piece of summer, the bandeau. A strip of fabric pretending to be a bra that is cooler and more comfortable than its everyday counterpart.  Wear it under summer dresses, tanks, anything through the hot months when you can’t quite let the ladies out, but they need some breathing room.

These simple earrings from Francesca’s were bought for this trip. I was clearly in an aqua/mint state of mind for many items on this vacation. And I love these sandals from Stitch Fix. They rub a little, so a heel cushion is needed, but the color and pattern had me at hello. These worked with my fancy dress, my boyfriend jeans, and this skirt. Look for a fun-color sandal this summer so any outfit can have a pop by simply slipping them on.

I wore this outfit the evening our hotel had a community night dinner.  They brought out whole fish, and platters of short ribs on long farm tables to enjoy as everyone at dinner got to know each other.

The sun went down and so did the cocktails, and it was a perfect evening, basically like every other night there.  We’d make our way back to our beach house and play cards or Scrabble until we couldn’t keep our eyes open.

Mexico-26In the end, I think we all need to let ourselves off the hook a little.  We even went out of town this past weekend with friends, which was planned even before we solidified our honeymoon, and felt guilty for taking two trips in one month.  But after both, we couldn’t have been happier that we just went for it. Everyone deserves a break, everyone deserves a vacation. I’m grateful my partner in crime is such a perfect travel buddy because we can’t wait to continue to explore the world together. And I’ll work on not feeling bad about it.
