The Weekend ReTREAT: Mug Cake All-Stars

Unknown

8.5.16

So as I stated last week, the mug cake chapter has come to a close.  But as I’m ready to move on, this endeavor pointed out that I’ve been doing these for so many months, I  can actually have a countdown of the best ones.  There were plenty to pick and chose from and a lot of these cakes where very dense, some had sharp pops of flavor I couldn’t get enough of (resulting in a mug that was scraped clean), and some had ingredients that I think should never be put in a mug cake.  If I told you I remembered every bite of every mug cake I’ve eaten over the past several months I’d be lying. But the nice thing is I know I don’t lie in my posts. While I didn’t really shit-talk too many of these cakes, I was very clear and honest about the ones I loved.  And because of that, looking through my old posts, I created the list of top 5 for these individual treats. I hope you resvisit them, as I know I will when I need a snack or have a sweet-tooth dessert craving for one.

5. Salted Caramel Mug Cake

I had to pick a chocolate one.  I don’t think any of the chocolate mug cakes are as successful as the others on this list. But out of the chocolate mug cakes, I think this one wins.  Salty and sweet are a great combination, and if you need to fulfill that need, this mug cake is a great option.

4. Blueberry Ricotta Mug Cake

One of the last mug cakes I made, I was pleasantly surprised.  Ricotta added to the moist aspect of this cake, and when you took a bite and a blueberry popped in your mouth I couldn’t help but go back for more. Especially for summer, this is a perfect choice.

3. Financier Mug Cake

This almond theme in this one along with the egg whites make it super fluffy and moist. In addition to the almond flour, hazelnuts add an extra crunch and texture to this cake.  It’s more complex than most other mug cakes, and it pays off.

2. Nutty Mug Cake

When I previously described this cake, I used the word ‘outstanding.’  Basically a perfect mug cake, it’s chock full of flavor because of the array of nuts and the apricot jam, not to mention the presentation is pretty striking.  For such a little cake, it packs a lot of flavor.

1. Frangipane Mug Cake

This cake took….the cake!!! After making these week after week, I could tell this batter would produce a lighter cake, full of almond flavor.  Frangipane is normally an almond based pastry cream, and this cake does not disappoint on it’s inspiration. Amaretto splashed in punches up the nutty flavor and this mug cake is the perfect example of not to judge a book by it’s cover.  It looks simple enough, but still water run deep, my friends, and so do the flavors in this cake.
